I’m often asked “what else?”—what more can people do to help their sense of smell through smell training. This is an advanced technique that can help heighten your awareness of small differences between smells. It is for people who have had some experience with the original smell training method using the four essential oils of rose, lemon, clove, and eucalyptus.

When you are using this kit, first take one jar and have a good, mindful sniff. You may find it helpful to look at my article about sniffing techniques, which you can find here. Now try another jar, and compare it to the first. Swap back and forth between the two, and see if you can notice which smell is different. Now try the third. In the beginning, they will probably all smell quite similar. Don’t worry about this too much. Over the next few weeks, you might notice that one seems “higher”, or another is “darker”. Maybe one smell seems “round” or “sharp”. The terms used here to describe this are not meant to be particularly meaningful, but you will find your own words to describe the differences—sometimes it helps to assign a colour to each one. By all means, look at the label while you are doing this. Try to teach yourself what each of the three essential oils have as characteristics that you can learn to recognise. Whatever you use to help yourself differentiate between all three is fine. It’s all about your interpretation. With this exercise, you want to actively use all three at once, swapping and comparing your experience. This makes it different from the basic smell training with rose, lemon, eucalyptus and clove. With the original oils, the smells are all quite different. With this exercise, they are more similar.
